The long-awaited dental hub in Uist and Barra Hospital in Benbecula is now in its final stages of completion, according to NHS Western Isles.

The decision to bring all dental services in Uist into a single integrated hub, located in the Uist and Barra Hospital was taken a number of years ago by NHS Western Isles, and subsequently by the Integrated Joint Board.

Following significant planning, design and building work, the four-chair dental hub in Uist and Barra Hospital is now set to open to patients on July 22, 2024.  The surgeries have been upgraded so that accessibility is significantly improved in the new facility.

NHS Western Isles Director of Dentistry, Joanne Bark, said: “I would like to warmly thank all those involved in this project, and I would like to particularly thank the public for their patience in this long-awaited project and in anticipation of the move to the new facility.

"I am very much looking forward to seeing the facility in its completion so that the staff and patients can enjoy the new and spacious facility which will improve accessibility, communication and collaborative working between services.”

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive, Gordon Jamieson, said: “I am delighted to see this new service opening. Despite a significant impact due to the pandemic, which has had to be taken into consideration, all those involved have worked hard to see this through to delivery.”
