Two Eriskay FC players who swapped their football balls for running shoes have presented the Uist and Barra branch of Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative with a cheque for £4001.

Duncan MacInnes and Seumas Campbell raised the charity cash by running the Edinburgh Marathon last month.

Instead of pounding the grass on the windswept Eriskay football pitch, the duo took in some of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks and picturesque views along the East Lothian coastline.

When presented with the outsized cheque, Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative - Uist and Barra stated, “What an incredible donation we have received from Duncan MacInnes and Seumas from their Edinburgh Marathon fundraiser. We continue to be blown away by the generosity of people in our community.

“A huge thank you to Duncan and Seumas for choosing to raise money for WICCI Uist & Barra. Your kindness will help us continue supporting Islanders and their families throughout Uist and Barra on their cancer journey.”

The Eriskay players initially aimed to raise £1,000 for the charity, but they were halfway to that target weeks before even leaving Eriskay.

On their now-closed Crowdfunder appeal, the pair said: “Having both lost loved ones to cancer, we understand the unbelievably hard and vital work this charity is doing. Across the Western Isles, it supports many families through what is an unimaginably challenging time.”
