Benbecula’s coastguard rescue team was called out on Thursday after an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was activated from a Norwegian fish farm vessel off the island.

It was established that the beacon itself was in another location, having been mislaid following transfer from the vessel.

Stornoway coastguard operations centre followed through with checks on vessels in the surrounding area but nothing untoward was found and the alert was classified as a false alarm.

A spokesperson for Stornoway coastguard said: “We are always happy to complete these kind of searches because, despite the time spent, there have been occasions historically when alerts from EPIRBs have drawn attention to a serious emergency.”
