Rescue teams were called out in force late on Saturday morning (13 August) after a report of swimmers in difficulty off the coast of Lewis near Arnol.

Stornoway coastguard operations centre took a report at 10.45am that two swimmers had been sighted apparently in trouble in the water.

Stornoway’s RNLI lifeboat, coastguard rescue helicopter R948 and coastguard rescue teams from Ness, Bragar, Stornoway and Breasclete were all called to the location, where it was discovered that the two swimmers were, in fact, creel buoys bobbing in the water.

The alert was classified as a false alarm with good intent and a spokesperson for Stornoway coastguard said that the caller did the right thing in calling the coastguard at the suspicion of people in danger.
