Shop conversion

A second fresh planning application has been submitted to convert the former Murdo Maclean’s shop at 25-27 Cromwell into four units.

WIFIIS Ltd. of Kenneth Street, Stornoway, seeks to develop the former flagship store into a mixed commercial and residential unit. It is proposed that the ground floor remains for retail use, while the first and second floors will be converted into a cafe/restaurant. The renovation/change of use application includes a rear ground floor store and a one-bedroom residential unit.

This is the second time the redevelopment has sought planning permission. The original application was submitted in August 2020. In the interim, the interior of the building has been stripped out.

The former shop is located within the town’s Conservation Area.


Erect a house

An application has been received for planning permission to erect a house at 32B Gress.

The applicants are Mr and Mrs Innes Maclean, of 4 Scotland Street, Stornoway. The one-storey house is to be sited on a 1200 square metre plot and includes installing an air source heat pump.

Erect two houses 

Planning permission is being sought to build two houses on Plots 1 and 2 at 23 Benside, Newmarket. The proposed dwellings are two three-bedroom single-storey houses. The applicant is listed as Mr Neil Mackay of Neil Mackay and Co. Ltd., based at Parkend Industrial Estate, Stornoway.

Extension to Creed Quarry

IA and C Maciver of Parkend Industrial Estate have applied for planning permission to extend the Creed Quarry at the Creed Enterprise Park, Lochs Road, Stornoway. The application includes a retrospective application for existing operations outwith the existing consent area.

The quarry covers an area of 4.17 hectares and is currently an active hard rock quarry. The extension relates to a small area of peat and scrub heather with rocky outcrops. The combined application aims to extend the life of the quarry for 13 years. Twelve years of mineral extraction and a year to complete restoration.

Erect a house

A proposal to build a 1.75 storey house at 37B Back has been submitted for planning consent by Mrs Amy Maciver of Corrodale, Back. The proposed site is a plot of 1.6 hectares and includes installing an air source heat pump.

Window replacement

Mr Ian Mackenzie, of 45 Matheson Road, Stornoway has submitted plans to replace the existing uPVC windows with new uPVC windows. Consent is also being sought to paint the exterior of the property grey.
